Incoming freshman information

We are happy that you are here! This site will be your go-to for most of the information you will need in the LCM Band.
While there are generally no dumb questions, before taking class time, ask yourself:

• Will my section leader know this information? (If so, go to them.)
• Is this information on the board? (Oftentimes, it is.)
• Is this information covered in the handbook? (The handbook is discussed at the beginning of the year, and is downloadable on this site. When in doubt, ask your section leader first.)

The LCM Band has a reputation for being one of the finest 4A Bands in the State of Texas. In fact, the LCM Band was the 1989-1990 Texas 4A Honor Band, designating it as the best of the best. How was this achieved? Through much sweat, tears, sacrifice - and some fun along the way. Our alums return often and stay informed of the band's progress. When you wonder why we ask so much of you, remember: We are not just any band. We have a legacy to uphold. It is bigger than ourselves, and it is our privilege to be a part.
We are also a family. The reason we willingly go through so much is that we love and support each other-through the sweat, tears, and sacrifice. You will make much-treasured friendships here.

How should I get prepared this summer?

• Get in shape. We often march at tempos of 180 beats per minute (3 beats per second). On top of that, we actually run in most shows. The second most common reason that Freshmen don't get into the competition show is inability to move their feet. (The first most common is grades.) Get your feet moving this summer. Run, or at least walk briskly as often as you can.
• Continue practicing--or start practicing--your instrument. There is a huge difference in high school music (especially for Region tryouts) from what you are used to. Consider taking private lessons. In music, it is true that a chain is only as strong as its weakest link. Commit to being strong!
• Bring your choice of water bottle and remember to stay hydrated. Many students use the "Camelbak" type of canteen. Whatever you can carry and march with will be fine.
• You will need a good pair of shoes to march in for rehearsal. No bare feet, no flip flops, no sandals.

How expensive is band?

• While we wish that band was free, it is not. Many bands charge activity fees anywhere from $500 to $1500 - and more for trips. We do not do that.  Specific fees are in your handbook, but you will be charged a $200 fee that covers the cost of uniform cleanings, a band show shirt,  LCM Band spirit shirt, gloves & bottled water and some meals.  You will need to purchase marching shoes and a uniform hanging bag.  Students will be required to pay for mallets, sticks, reeds, valve oil and other accessories.  Instrument repairs are also your responsibility. Everyone's bill will be slightly different.

What if I can't afford it?

• We provide many fund raising opportunities. But do not be one of those students that neither pays your bill nor participates in fund raisers. 

What kind of time commitment is involved?

• You start band at the end of July. Summer band runs 8 AM to 4:30 PM Monday through Friday. There will be some daily tweaks to the schedule, but we will keep you posted. Once school starts, you have after-school rehearsals Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday 4:00-6:00; Wednesdays, 4:00-5:00. You have required performances at all football games, contests, and parades.
• Do you want to get a college scholarship, be an All-Region or All-State player? You'll want to take private lessons and add practice time onto what has been mentioned above.

 ​What if I'm in Athletics/Cheer/Honey Bears?

• EVERYONE can participate in Band in some capacity.  Believe it or not, Varsity Football players, Varsity Cheerleaders, Volleyball players, and Honey Bears have all marched before. However, we do show flexibility for those activities in the Fall. Often, these people do not march. They are still expected to participate whenever possible (in the stands, parades, contests, rehearsals, and other performances).
• Non-varsity athletes and cheerleaders are expected to participate to be with the band when not at other practices. This includes Summer Band, in the stands, at contests, rehearsals, and other performances.

I live in Mauriceville. Is there any transportation help for summer band?

• Yes. For summer band, a bus will leave MMS every morning at 7:30 AM and return by 5:00 PM. (You'll need to bring a lunch or make arrangements to find one.)  There will not be a bus to Mauriceville after football games.

What if I don't earn a spot in the contest show?

• If, due to growing feet or coordination challenges, you do not earn a spot in the competition show, DO NOT GIVE UP. As long as you progress, you may get called up as spots get vacated. KEEP YOUR ATTITUDE UP. Weak attitudes have no shot at advancement.
• Regardless, you will still march at football games and parades. You will also participate in every other capacity. At contest, however, you will assist directors and boosters in other key duties. If grades are a problem, you'll not be eligible to participate in any way.
